As the 2024 presidential election draws near, a turning point in the race for the White House shook up both the democratic and republican party’s campaign. In June of 2024, the presidential debate between the democratic candidate, Joe Biden, and the republican candidate, Donald Trump, occurred. Biden, who had been condemned for running for president at the age of 81, struggled to answer the questions given from the moderator. Not from lack of intelligence, but from a struggle of forming sentences. Over the past year, we have seen Biden forget names in speeches or trail off his sentences but after the June 27th debate, Biden’s democratic allies encouraged him to drop out of his re-election bid. Biden took the advice and dropped out of re-election July 21, 2024, a major turning point in the Democratic party’s campaign.
Quickly after Biden dropped out of re-election, he endorsed Kamala Harris to take on Trump for the presidency of the United States. Making Harris the first Black woman to be at the top of a major the ticket. However, she still had to secure the votes of delegates for her party’s nomination and turn around an election campaign that was built for Biden. The Democratic party needed to convince their voters that Harris would be a great candidate for presidency. For the Republican party, Trump needed to change his focus onto a new opponent after years of preparing for Biden.
As Kamala Harris’ campaign got up and running, she raised $126 million in 3 days. The Democratic party was more eager to devote time to Harris. New polls are showing that the race for presidency has no clear leader, but if her campaign continues to grow strong, she could soon take the lead. This upcoming election will be very interesting and could possibly go into the history books for the future.
